Instructional materials support refers to the system by which teaching materials are acquired, distributed and maintained in "ready to teach" order. Instructional materials must be made accessible to teachers and students in a timely and equitable manner. Instructional materials include curriculum materials, kits, manipulatives, specialized science or mathematics equipment, live organisms, technology tools and more. Effective, inquiry-based instruction requires the availability of a wide range of manipulative materials for teacher and student use. If materials intensive instructional improvement is to be sustained, teachers need to have a dependable, cost effective method of obtaining these materials and a system of refurbishing those that are consumed, worn out or misplaced. SCCMS, through its partnership with the Association of Science Materials Centers (ASMC), www.kitsupport.org will assist the state of South Carolina in identifying and implementing a system to promote instructional improvement through efficient and sustainable instructional materials support.
