What is Aggregate?
Aggregate is any hard, mineral material such as gravel, crushed stone, sand, slag, etc.

What is Asphalt Binder?
Asphalt Binder, also known as Asphalt Cement, is a refined brown to black cementitious material that is used widely in the paving industry.  It is a semi-solid at room temperature and a liquid at hotter temperatures.

What is Hot Mix Asphalt?
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of aggregates and asphalt binder used as a paving material.

What is Rubberized Asphalt?
Rubberized Asphalt is a broad term to describe Hot Mix Asphalt that contains recycled rubber.  This recycled rubber can be introduced into the Hot Mix Asphalt by either blending it into the hot liquid asphalt cement (Wet Process) or by blending it in with the stone (Dry Process).

What is Crumb Rubber Modifier?
Crumb Rubber Modifier is the term used to describe ground waste tire rubber used in Hot Mix Asphalt and other paving applications.

What is meant by “Wet Process” and “Dry Process”?
The terms “Wet Process” and “Dry Process” both refer to methods of introducing recycled rubber into Hot Mix Asphalt.

  • The “Wet Process” requires that a finely ground rubber be blended into the hot, liquid asphalt cement prior to the asphalt cement being mixed with aggregate.
  • The “Dry Process” requires that a slightly coarser ground rubber be mixed in to the aggregate prior to the asphalt cement being introduced.
What is Asphalt-Rubber?
Asphalt-Rubber is the combination of asphalt cement and ground rubber.  Asphalt-Rubber is used in the “Wet Process” for making rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt as well as other paving applications. (See ASTM D6114 and D8)

What are the reported advantages of using rubber in asphalt?

  • The number of waste tires can be reduced
  • Asphalt pavements containing rubber are more flexible under heavy loads, which results in fewer cracking and durability problems.
  • It has also been observed that asphalt containing rubber is more resistant to cold weather cracking and more resistant to warm weather rutting.

Besides using it in asphalt, how can waste rubber be recycled?
Asphalt-Rubber can be:

  • used as a crack filler for pavements
  • sprayed onto pavements as a seal coat
  • sprayed onto pavements and covered with aggregate to be used as a surface treatment (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer, aka SAMI, and Asphalt Rubber Membrane Interlayer, aka ARMI, are both examples of this)
Shredded tires can be:
  • used as fill in septic tanks
  • used as fill for embankments
