Asphalt Rubber Technology Service

 Seminars

One of ARTS’ goals is to utilize workshops to educate about and raise awareness of the various uses of crumb rubber derived from scrap tires, e.g., rubberized asphalt and embankment materials.

2002 Seminars

This year we would like to offer more individualized opportunities for you to hear about ARTS and the grant program. Rather than asking you to come to us and participate in a day-long event, we would like to visit you.

In our meeting we can discuss potential projects and how to go about applying for grant monies. This will give us the opportunity to "ride the roads" with you, in your municipality, and determine which application of rubberized asphalt would be best utilized. If you choose to invite potential contractors, we will be able to answer their questions in open and project-specific discussions. If you don't yet have a specific project in mind, and just need an overview of the ARTS program, we are more than happy to make a presentation that will cover all the facts you need to get started.

If you would like to set up a meeting with a member of the ARTS team, please contact Wendy Franzese at 864-656-6799 or by using the e-mail link provided.

Here's What We Offered in 2001

In an effort to make our workshops available to the most people, we scheduled them throughout the state of South Carolina. The workshops were held in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville.  Handout materials, lunch, and break refreshments are included in the registration fee.
The Basics of Rubberized Asphalt
Greenville, SC - Wednesday, April 11

The speakers included ARTS Director, Serji Amirkhanian, from Clemson University, Lawrence Smith, P.E. from Florida who described the State's experiences with Rubberized Asphalt, Alan Moreland of Rouse Polymerics who explained the tire shredding process, and Ronnie Blacklidge, Jr. of Blacklidge Emulsions, Inc. who explained the blending process.

Mr. Smith is a member of the Rubber Pavements Association Technical Advisory Board, served the Florida Department of Transportation for over 36 years. As the State Materials and Research Engineer, he was responsible for the operations of FLDOT’s Material Office, assuring that research needs were identified and properly addressed. His experience includes the development of Florida's rubberized asphalt specifications as well as research on topics such as Pavement Friction, Pavement Design, Recycling, and Pavement Management Performance/Analysis.
