S. Michael Kilbey, II, Ph.D. Research Interests: Polymer Surface Engineering Professor Kilbey’s research activities focus primarily on using ultrathin polymer films to tailor interfacial properties. His group is concerned with assembly-structure-property relationships of polymeric materials confined to the solid-fluid interface, and a variety of techniques that probe molecular level structure are used routinely. Polymer layers that straddle phase boundaries and, therefore, mediate interactions across interfaces are made by self-assembly of macromolecular amphiphiles and surface-initiated polymerizations. Most recently the group has been involved in synthesizing and studying stimuli-responsive layers comprised of multi-component and biopolymer systems. |
