Information for the Prospective Undergraduate Student

The undergraduate program in chemical engineering includes a blend of classroom and laboratory instruction to prepare students for professional practice and lifelong learning in our discipline.

Our graduates will have careers characterized by:

  • success in chemical engineering practice, post-graduate education, or other areas making use of engineering skills - as defined by accomplishments and/or job satisfaction
  • demonstrated success in the design of chemical processes and/or identification, formulation, and solution of chemical engineering problems
  • ethical behavior in all endeavors

What is Chemical Engineering?

Chemical Engineering combines four important areas: chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics, while focusing on the engineering and processing of materials, synthesis, and purification.

Emphasis Areas

Nine hours have been designated for student chosen emphasis areas. Six emphasis areas have been outlined by the department.

  • Applied Engineering, Mathematics, and Science
  • Biomolecular Engineering and Science
  • Business Management
  • Energy Studies
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Polymeric Materials

Students may choose to apply these nine hours toward any minor at Clemson, with the exception of Chemisty and Cluster minors. The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department is one of few departments on campus that gives this option.

Student Opportunities

There are many opportunities for students outside the classroom.

  • Working with faculty on sponsored research projects
  • Joining the student chapter of AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers)
  • Building and testing the ChemE car for competition
  • Attending professional and social events
  • Study Abroad, including a special summer program in Vienna

Post-Graduation Opportunities

Average starting salary for ChBE B.S graduates is $66,000.

Here are some important statistics regarding post-graduation choices by ChBE graduates:

  • 95% of students have definite career plans before graduation (jobs or acceptance into graduate/professional schools)
  • 10-15% of students pursue graduate education in engineering
  • 10-15% of students pursue professional degrees (i.e. medical, law, veterinary, dental, etc.)

Important Information about Chemical Engineering at Clemson

Approximately 150 undergraduate students are currently majoring in chemical engineering. Small class sizes facilitate student/faculty interactions. The student-to-faculty ratio is only 15. Often times, students take multiple courses together and frequently work in teams.

The BS in Chemical Engineering is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Our program has 10 dedicated faculty members, several of whom have received national, regional, and university teaching awards. In addition we have 4 staff members who provide support to our department.
