Doctor of Philosophy

Qualified students enter the Ph.D. program directly after completing their B.S. degree or after the first semester in the M.S. program.

You must complete at least 36 hours of approved course work beyond the B.S. degree.

These courses must meet the following requirements:

  • Satisfy the M.S. requirements of Clemson
  • Include at least 12 hours in fields other than chemical engineering
  • Include at least 12 hours taken at Clemson

You must also complete at least 30 credit hours of research. There is no language requirement.

As a Ph.D. student, you will need to take written and oral Ph.D. qualifying exams. The written exam in chemical engineering is taken after you complete your first semester at Clemson.

The oral comprehensive exam consists of a presentation based on your research project. Normally this exam is scheduled within six months after successfully completing the written comprehensive exam. Your final requirement as a Ph.D. student is the oral defense of your dissertation.
