Chemistry professor named Cottrell Scholar

Dennis Smith, an associate chemistry professor, has been named a 2001 Cottrell Scholar. This prestigious fellowship for beginning faculty in the sciences recognizes those who excel in both teaching and research. Smith is one of 17 young professors nationwide to receive the honor. The award includes a $75,000 research grant.

Smith, 35, received the award for his work in the synthesis and fabrication of novel fluoropolymers for photonics applications. His work -- in collaboration with faculty from Clemson's Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technology (COMSET) -- may help pave the way for plastic optical switches and fibers that are easier to handle and potentially less expensive than what is currently on the market.

"Advances in these areas will help meet the world's insatiable appetite for bandwidth,"said Smith. "Faster, cheaper, smaller is the name of the game, and polymers are ready to play and win."
