The College of Engineering and Science has had unprecedented success in the area of research awards. In fact, this marks the second consecutive year of substantial research growth for the college. Research awards during fiscal 1999-2000 increased by approximately $7.1M, from $27.2M to $34.3M. During the past year, 2000-2001, research awards increased by another $13.8M to $48.1M. This represents a one-year increase of 40%, or a two-year growth of 77%. Our yield rate (the percentage of grants funded compared to proposals submitted) this past year was 42%, which significantly surpasses our long-term average of approximately 33%.

We also have every expectation that this momentum will carry over to the current year as well. The number of proposals submitted this year increased by 12%, but the corresponding proposed research volume doubled to $225M. While I do not want to be accused of counting
chickens before they hatch, if our research-funding yield holds at 33%, we should realize a funding level of some $75M during the current fiscal year.

Clearly this sort of performance represents significant effort and exceptional performance on the part of the college's faculty and staff. I am proud to be able to work with such a visionary and dedicated group.
