| This has been an exciting
autumn in the history of the college and the university. As many of you
know, Clemson's selection as the "College of the Year" in the Time Princeton
Review has made the university a "hot commodity" among prospective students.
Our College's freshman class is significantly larger and brighter again this year. The sciences freshman class is 6% larger than last year's class and the textiles class is up 22%, while the engineering freshman class is 9.4% larger. The total |

| number of matriculating freshmen
was 1,047, or 80 more than last year. Also, the average SAT score of our
entering students is 1216 - an 11 point increase over last year. We had a very successful year in research funding. Research awards in the College of Engineering & Science increased by about $7.1M, from $27.2M to $34.3M for the past fiscal year. The number of proposals submitted this year increased slightly from 524 to 530, but nearly $112M in research was proposed. The average proposal was over $211,000. If our research-funding yield holds at our historic level of about 33%, we should realize a funding level of $37 to $38M during the current fiscal year. With this kind of success in the research-funding arena, we are on track to reach the $52.5M research-funding goal President Barker set for us. As you know, President Barker has challenged all of us to make Clemson University one of the nation's Top 20 national public universities. I fully and enthusiastically support this goal. We must meet this challenge for our students, as elevating an institution's reputation adds significant intrinsic value to every diploma that we will award and every diploma we have ever awarded. To achieve this goal, we must commit ourselves to the following: -Continue to provide exceptional undergraduate and graduate instruction, and innovate wherever possible. -Continue to increase the overall quality of our undergraduate students. -Continue to grow our research funding. -Recruit a greater number of graduate students, especially at the Ph.D. level. This is needed to support the growth of our funded research activities. -Increase our output of scholarly papers. -Increase our involvement in providing leadership for professional organizations. Significant challenges to be sure, but ones that the College of Engineering and Science are anxious to address. |
