Open House
The staff of
the Clemson's Electronic Imaging and Analytical Services Laboratory
held an open house recently to celebrate equipment upgrades which
take them to the pinnacle of analytical facilities in the Southeast.
The lab now boasts an Hitachi FB-2000A Focused Ion Beam unit, which
will be used primarily for sample preparation. The samples will
be used on the new Hitachi HD-2000 Scanning Transmission Electron
Microscope, which has a magnification of 5,000,000X.
"We're
very fortunate to be able to bring this capability to the university,"
observed Bill Kay, EIAS director. "No university in the southeast
has the tandem capabilities inherent in the HD-2000 and FB-2000A."
These upgrades reflect an investment exceeding $2.3 million.

The EIAS Open
House included a series of seminars presented by Dr. David Joy,
who is currently a distinguished professor and director of the electron
microscopy facility at the University of Tennessee, and leader of
the imaging and manipulation facility of the Center for Nanomaterials
Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is the author of over
350 papers and eight books concerning electron microscopy and microanalysis.
