Flying high

Corina Geiculescu, (Ph.D. - Chemistry '98), has become a high flyer! As a Senior Scientist with St. Jude Medical's Cardiac Rhythm Management Division (CRMD), Geiculescu has been conducting materials research in microgravity conditions. She's been a passenger on the NASA research jet KC-135A, affectionately known as the "Vomit Comet." During these flights, the aircraft goes through several steep parabolic arcs, causing the occupants to experience about 20 - 30 seconds of weightlessness on each plunge. Various experiments are conducted under these conditions to avoid the influence of the Earth's gravitational pull.

Geiculescus' work will contribute to advancements in the design and development of implantable cardiovascular devices.
