Chemistry professor wins NIH recognition

The National Institutes of Health has recognized Clemson University chemist John Huffman as one of the nation's outstanding scientists. Huffman is best known for his work in exploring the potential medical benefits of compounds related to the active agents in marijuana. The compounds have shown tremendous promise in helping ease tremors and severe muscle stiffness in patients with multiple sclerosis.

The prestigious $400,000 Senior Scientist Award provides support to outstanding scientists who have demonstrated a sustained high level of productivity and whose expertise, research accomplishments and contributions to the field are critical to an NIH mission area. The award was made by the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse.

"Dr. Huffman's award validates what we've known all along-that Clemson University, and with it South Carolina, have some of the top scientific minds in the country," said Thomas Keinath, dean of the College of Engineering and Science.
