Clemson University's College of Engineering and Science has established an Outstanding Young Alumni Award to recognize accomplishments of fast-track young alumni. The award's debut recipients were announced at Clemson's sixth annual engineering and science banquet held in conjunction with National Engineers Week.

The first recipient, Karen Jenks Brewer, earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from Clemson in 1987 and now is a highly successful member of the chemistry faculty at Virginia Tech."Her scholarship, teaching and service

are exemplary of what one wishes to see in a university faculty member," said Dean Thomas Keinath. "Not only has she established a national reputation in competitive mainstream research areas, but she also has received recognition for her work in chemistry education. She is a role model for Clemson chemistry students who aspire to faculty careers at major universities." She has already received 24 research grants totaling $1.1 million and graduated five Ph.D. students.
The second recipient was Christine Mullins, who completed work on her BS in industrial engineering from Clemson in 1988 and went on to receive an MBA from Southern Methodist University. She began her career with American Airlines where, as manager of airport systems development, she was responsible for design and implementation of American Airlines' access system, the smartcard-based boarding
