Nanotechnology research inspires industry collaboration

Want a flat panel color display for your laptop or wide screen TV without having to mortgage the house to afford it? Research making this technology available and affordable is ongoing at the new Laboratory for Nanotechnology at Clemson.

As part of Clemson's Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET), the laboratory recently completed its move to the 18,000 sq. ft. Griffith Building in Pendleton. With phase one of the Griffith renovation completed, researchers will continue to investigate ways of incorporating nanoparticles into thin film devices to improve the efficiency and lifetime of organic displays. The technology is being developed in conjunction with Yazaki Meter Corp. for use in automobile dashboards and meters. Yazaki is a supplier of wiring and dashboard components to major auto companies such as Toyoto, Nissan, Honda, and Ford.

Current state-of-the-art car and home stereos contain inorganic light-emitting diodes, which are not as bright, or aesthetically pleasing, as the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) currently under development. In addition, the older versions are more power-hungry than the new models. The new organic displays can be several times brighter than current technology with lower power demands. These new LCD's can also provide active matrix displays, which would permit the capability of on-screen movement. The nanotechnology under development at Clemson will provide more sophisticated display capabilities at lower costs, which will translate into broader applications and use.
