REU work
published
As a rising
senior, Sarina Kay ('01 B.S. BIOS) was selected to participate in
a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in bioengineering
at Purdue University. Her research project focused on orthopedic
implant material. The program is funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF).

"For
10 weeks, I worked 14-hour days, she observed. "It was a challenge,
but I loved it." The hard work paid off. Kay's paper, "Nanostructured
Polymer: Nanophase Ceramic Composites Enhance Osteoblast and Chondrocyte
Adhesion," was published in Tissue Engineering. She was also
invited to present her research at the 2002 Society for Biomaterials
conference this spring, and received the first place award in undergraduate
research by the orthopedic tissue engineering special interest group
of the Society. She'll begin her graduate work at Tulane this fall.
