As we complete one academic year, our attention naturally turns to the upcoming semester. I'm looking forward to the 2002-2003 academic year with great anticipation. We'll realize a milestone of sorts in the College of Engineering and Science. It's one of those events that will come and go without much fanfare, but in years to come it's significance will be fully realized and appreciated. As you may recall, Clemson's Board of Trustees approved a student laptop computer requirement beginning in the fall of 2002, for freshmen and sophomores enrolled in the College of Engineering and Science, and freshmen enrolled in the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

For four years we instituted a voluntary pilot laptop program in the College, and those students who've participated, strongly endorse the laptop environment. Over 70% of the participants in the pilot program believe their computer skills are now above average. Data also shows that

these students had a slightly higher GPR when compared with non-laptop students.

With the laptop mandate in place, the University has committed resources to make sure the potential of this technology is realized. Classrooms are being upgraded and wireless networking is being rapidly extended. The goal is to establish a ubiquitous wireless environment. Students will not have to "plug in" to gain access. With their laptop, they can go online from anywhere on campus at anytime! Class materials, instructor notes, supplemental resources are literally at their fingertips.

The Provost has instituted faculty workshops on teaching with laptops. Right now there are approximately 100 "laptop course" sections scheduled for this fall. Most College of Engineering and Science majors offer at least one sophomore laptop course, and there is a wide range of "general education" courses at the freshman and sophomore level.

So you see, the upcoming term will be very exciting indeed. I believe we're about to take a giant step forward in how we educate our students. It's apparent that wireless, mobile networking is becoming the norm in the corporate world. This program will help ensure that our graduates are prepared for that environment.
