Mathematics: The Next National Champion? Approximately 200 seventh- and eighth-grade "mathletes" competed head-to-head at a MathCounts competition held at Clemson recently. MathCounts is a national math coaching and competition program that promotes math achievement through grass-roots involvement. The local event, which drew student teams from Pickens, Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Greenwood counties, was co-sponsored by the Piedmont Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers and the Clemson University College of Engineering and Science. "MathCounts promotes student interest in math by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport," said Pat Flood, chapter president. Problems used in the competitions emphasize team problem-solving and real-world situations. Winners go on to the state competition, and the top four scorers and the top coach in each state competition earn an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state at the national finals. "It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to host the MathCounts competition and to recognize these highly talented and motivated young people from the Upstate," said Judith Wilkinson, director of undergraduate recruitment for Clemson's College of Engineering and Science. "We want them to see firsthand the academic excellence of our engineering and science programs at Clemson - and, of course, hope to see them as Clemson undergraduates in a few years." |
