CES Classified Staff Honored

Clemson's College of Engineering and Science gave special awards based on merit, innovation and achievement to nine staff members at its annual Classified Staff Awards Ceremony held in December.

The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the Hattie B. Wagener Award, which is given annually to the top administrative staff member. The award, which began in 1997, carries a $1,000 cash prize.

The award is sponsored by the sons of "Boonie" Wagener, a longtime secretary in the electrical engineering department. Her sons, Ken, Ben and Earl, began the endowed fund to honor the outstanding contributions of their mother and those who follow in her footsteps.

Bonnie Arrick, an administrative assistant in the chemistry department, was honored with the Wagener Award for her work with foreign students struggling with English as a second language. She led study groups and tutored one-on-one.

Winners of the 1998 merit awards were Patricia Nigro, a student services program coordinator in general engineering; Diana Stamey, a student services specialist in chemical engineering; and Judy Guinn, an administrative assistant in industrial engineering.

Innovation award winners included Michael Justice, a research laboratory technician in mechanical engineering; Gwen Hamilton, an information resource consultant in electrical and computer engineering; and Laura Hupp, a lab specialist in chemistry.

Achievement award winners were Casandra Gibson, an administrative assistant in mechanical engineering; Jane Jacobi, program manager in the Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films; and Rachel Huey, student services program coordinator in civil engineering.

"Without classified staff members, this University -- ndeed, any organization -- would grind to a halt," said Thomas Keinath, dean of the college. "They provide the behind-the-scenes support that makes it possible for our faculty to excel in the classrooms and laboratories. These annual awards give us a way to say 'thank you.'"
