A New Look

As you can see, our alumni newsletter has a new look and is now available online. Earnest represents our continuing effort to keep you informed about the College of Engineering and Science (CES). Traditionally we've published an annual newsletter, but we've decided to move to a biannual schedule, so look to hear from us again shortly after the first of the year.

This is your newsletter, so we need to hear from you. If you have career or industry news, please send it to the attention of our new college relations/marketing director, Ron Grant. The next newsletter will include a section of alumni news, so you'll have a way to keep in touch with those former classmates and colleagues who are making their mark on business and industry.

This renewed emphasis on alumni communications is a reflection of what we provide in the College of Engineering and Science. Early on, our students discover that developing their communications skills is just as important as building a body of technical knowledge and know-how. Developing scientific and engineering advancements does little good if one is unable to share that vision in an understandable way with colleagues and coworkers. Often such advancements require a team effort. Our students recognize and understand the benefits of working together with a sense of determination and cooperation.

Last fall, determination and cooperation by a group of Clemson and Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty led to the establishment of Clemson University's Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films (CAEFF). This team successfully competed against 83 other nationally ranked research institutions for the National Science Foundation award. This signal event will bring Clemson more than $100 million in research support over the next decade and solidify its standing as a national research university. Establishment of the CAEFF is one of the major achievements from this past academic year.

As you read through the site, you'll see that the past academic year has been an exciting one. As we stand on the brink of the 21st century, we are continually looking for new ways to fulfill the mission of the College of Engineering and Science.

You can be a part of that mission. You are our contacts in the real world, and your input is critical in helping us maintain a relevant college that meets industrial and societal needs and requirements. If you've been an active alumnus, we appreciate your participation. If you haven't, we hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to become involved. By working together we can strengthen the College of Engineering and Science and, by extension, Clemson University. As the reputation of our college grows, so does the stature of those who have completed their work here.

Earnest is published by the College of Engineering and Science at Clemson University for the alumni and friends of the College. Subscriptions are free upon request.
