CHE greenlights new center
The
Commission on Higher Education has approved the establishment of
the Center for Nuclear Environmental Engineering Science and Radioactive
Waste Management (CNEESRWM), at Clemson. The center will be a functional
unit within the College of Engineering and Science, and will be
housed in the School of the Environment. It will also be associated
with the Clemson Environmental Institute.
|
| Robert A. Fjeld Dempsey Professor in the School
of the Environment, will be the director of the new center,
which will focus on the environmental aspect of nuclear technologies. |
CNEESRWM
will serve as a focal point for research in the environmental aspects
of nuclear technologies, and naturally-occurring radioactive radiation.
The mission of the center is research and education in the characterization,
evaluation, and remediation of radioactive contamination, as well
as development of processes for the management of radioactive wastes.
The center will be an important resource for South Carolina, working
to ensure that activities involving nuclear materials are effective
and environmentally sound. According to Robert A. Fjeld, Dempsey
Professor in the School of the Environment, and the new center director,
says “Through research on contemporary environmental radiological
problems at the state, national, and international level, CNEESRWM
will become internationally recognized for scholarly endeavors.”
Since the Center will not offer courses or administer a degree-granting
program, participating faculty will maintain their current curriculum-related
duties within their home departments.
