3CT takes 4th at Nationals

With a team consisting mostly of new faces and no returning paddlers from 2002, Clemson’s Concrete Canoe Team finished fourth at the 16th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC), hosted by Drexel University. While Clemson had captured three of the previous four national titles heading into the 2003 competition, a change in the NCCC rules limiting participation to a maximum of three years (as one of the 10 registered participants), combined with a ban on graduate students, created an unexpected loss of key personnel. Undeterred, those affected members hit the recruiting trail and landed a very talented crew of student-athletes who managed to win three races and finish second in the other two! Given its lack of national experience, this team performed extremely well.

While a fourth-place finish was quite good for 2003, expectations for next year will be high as this team returns all but one member.

3CT for 2003 includes (top row left to right) Kyle Farley, Ben Williams, Hayes Jones, Scott Horton, Matt Goodner; (bottom, left to right) Josh Grein, Serji Amirkhanian (faculty advisor), October McConnell, Ashley Stamps, Chrissy Sloyer, John Bauknight, Seth Dean.
