C.A.R.S.

The Clemson Auto Racing Society has been around for a couple of years, but the group is now poised to make NASCAR history. The team is working toward fielding a Late Model Stockcar and competing in the 2004 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, at the Greenville Pickens Speedway. If they’re successful, C.A.R.S. will become the first student-run race team to compete in NASCAR-sanctioned events.

Rick Coulter, of Rick Coulter Racecars, and owner Rick Fazio, originally built the Chevrolet Monte Carol racecar in 2000. After one season, the car was put into storage when Fazio began driving for other teams. Recognizing the potential and determination in C.A.R.S., Fazio graciously offered the use of his personal racecar so that Clemson students can have the opportunity to experience the team concept of professional motorsports. All work has been completed exclusively by C.A.R.S. members, under the direction of Fazio. The lease arrangement between Fazio and Clemson calls for him to serve as the driver of the car.

C.A.R.S. is composed of Clemson University students, faculty, and alumni, as well as industry partners, who share a passion for motorsports. Students can become members of C.A.R.S. regardless of major. There is a small membership fee, but the student controls the amount of involvement he or she puts into the program. Members can develop a variety of skills, from hands-on car modification and working on a pit crew, to marketing and public relations. C.A.R.S. fosters communication between the motorsports industry and Clemson students. For more information, go to www.clemson.edu/~auto
