Alumni Awards

Albert Neill Cameron, Sr., (BS CE ‘41) of Cashiers, N.C. has been recognized with the Distinguished Service Award, Clemson’s highest alumni honor. Cameron spent 35 years with the U.S. Department of Interior U.S. Geological Survey, and he became one of the country’s top water resource authorities. He served at the national headquarters and as chief of the Georgia and Louisiana water resource districts. He was awarded the U.S. Department of Interior Medal for Meritorious Service and retired in 1981 to work another 10 years as a consulting hydrologist.

Cameron is an active member of the community -- tutoring children, serving on the local hospital board and lending his civil engineering expertise to the community’s infrastructure. He is a member of the Cashiers Valley Rotary Club and has received many Rotary awards, including the 2002 Al Cameron Service-Above-Self Award, named in his honor. In recognition for his community service, the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce named him the 2003 Citizen of the Year.

Ben A. Leppard Jr., (BS ME ‘74) P.E., was installed as director and regional chair of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) at its 2004 Annual Meeting. He is the principal of Leppard Johnson and Associates, Tucker, Ga.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve the evolving needs of the public.

In this new position, Leppard serves on ASHRAE’s Board of Directors and as chair of the Society’s Region IV. He oversees the activities of the chapters in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

He has held all offices in the Atlanta Chapter, and received the chapter’s Engineer of the Year – Private Practice Award, the Region IV Membership Beacon Award and the Regional Award of Merit.

Daniel Malone (BS TMGT ‘92) recently joined Accessory Brands, Inc. (ABI) as vice president of manufacturing. ABI, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and on the web at www.dahook.com, is a manufacturing, sales and distribution company. Their product lines focus on sports items and accessories, including headbands, wristbands, headwear, laces and lanyards, sport bags and basketballs. ABI has current licensing agreements with the NBA, the NHL, MLB–Europe, and Reebok, among others. Malone and his wife, Anne (MED SPEC ED 97), have two sons; Christopher, 4, and George, 18 months. They have been in Winston-Salem since 1997, where he was plant manager for the Carolon Company, makers of medical textile products.

The Culbertson Lecture Hall (room 100 in Earle Hall) was dedicated this fall, honoring Charles M. Culbertson, II (BS ChE ‘71) and his wife, Dianne.

The Culbertsons have supported chemical engineering through the years with an endowed scholarship established in 1997. Most recently, and the reason for the dedication, they have created an irrevocable trust naming Clemson University and chemical engineering as the beneficiary. This gift will support the Charles M. Culbertson, II, and Dianne T. Culbertson Endowment for Excellence in providing unrestricted funds for the department. These funds can be used in a variety of ways to enrich the educational experience here at Clemson, such as graduate student recruiting, seminar speakers, and special lectures.

The Culbertsons have two sons, Chad (BS CPINSYS ‘00) and Tucker, who is completing his J.D. degree at University Of California Berkeley.
