Alumni in the Spotlight

From the Dean

The fall term has been another exciting semester in the College of Engineering and Science – one characterized by growth and advancement. You’ll notice from the article on page 1, that we’ve completed two facility projects that will enhance our academic programs and expand the space available for our research endeavors. I’m speaking of the Advanced Materials Laboratory, in the Clemson Research Park, and the renovations to McAdams Hall, which is the new home for our Computer Science Department. Completing these facilities marks a significant milestone in the history of the college.

And speaking of history – for the first time, we have women assuming important administrative roles in the college. Kathleen Richardson, Ph.D., is the new Director of the School of Materials Science & Engineering, and Martine LaBerge, Ph.D. is now the Chair of Bioengineering. Both bring outstanding scholarship and leadership capabilities to their respective positions. They will no doubt make significant contributions to the college, while serving as inspirational role models and mentors for our undergraduate and graduate students.

The International Center for Automotive Engineering (ICAR) continues to fast-track to an August 2006 launch date, at which time, the first class of masters and doctoral students will be enrolled. Work has begun on the Information Technology Research Center, and we anticipate that ground will be broken early in the new year for the Campbell Graduate Education Center. Developing a new curriculum in systems integration with a focus on automotive engineering, hiring a cohort of new faculty, and enlisting a number of auto industry partners have been the focus of recent activities.

Dr. Murray Daw is the second College of Engineering and Science faculty member named to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins 150 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners who are among the 4,500 members of the academy..

Finally, I direct you to the story concerning our classified staff. Many of the achievements and accomplishments we’ve realized in the college come about because of the untiring efforts of the college’s staff. These awards recognize only a few members of what I consider to be an outstanding and dedicated team. Each has my gratitude and appreciation for all they do for the college.
