IE co-op receives NASA Award

Last summer, Kerry McGuire, a senior industrial engineering student, received NASA’s Co-Op Special Achievement Award which recognizes outstanding work accomplishments.

She was completing her second tour at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, and was working in the Habitability and Environmental Factors division. Her main project was to investigate usage of two medical packs carried on the International Space Station - the Ambulatory Medical Pack (AMP) and the Advanced Life Support Pack (ALSP). She conducted a series of human factors evaluations on the AMP and ALSP. Through the use of eye tracking, simulation software, usability evaluations, and electronic card sorting, she came up with alternative design concepts for improved efficiency and effectiveness. McGuire’s work will be used as a prototype for redesign of the two medical packs.

McGuire will be returning to NASA’s Johnson Space Center this spring for her last tour as an undergraduate student. She will be working as a flight controller in the Environmental Crew Life Support System for the International Space Station. Flight controllers monitor the crew and operations of the Space Station and are essential to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the station.
