Kurfess named Society of Manufacturing
Engineers Fellow
Clemson University mechanical engineering professor, Thomas R. Kurfess,
has been named by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) to
its prestigious College of Fellows.
Kurfess holds
the BMW Manufacturing Chair in Automotive Engineering and is director
of the Carroll A. Campbell Graduate Engineering Center at the Clemson
University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).
SME Fellows are recognized by the manufacturing community as key
contributors to the social, technical and educational progress of
manufacturing.
“Selection as an SME Fellow is a tribute to the various accomplishments
of each of these manufacturing leaders,” said Willy Geary,
2006 SME president. “The 2006 class is representative of today’s
most valuable contributors to the industry and to the Society. SME
commends them for their leadership, innovation and dedication to
the profession.”
In selecting Kurfess, SME’s International Awards & Recognition
Committee cited his contributions to manufacturing:
“Hailed as one of the world’s leading experts in the
field of micro-scale manufacturing metrology, with research focused
on the design and development of high precision manufacturing and
metrology systems, Kurfess is globally recognized for his advocacy
and contributions to the industry. His work is currently focused
on international automotive technology and manufacturing where developments
in production, safety, emissions and energy consumption will have
a long-range impact worldwide. Kurfess is best known through his
work in precision manufacturing systems, advanced process control,
metrology and his service to the manufacturing community.”
