From the Dean
Putting together this first column for Earnest has given me a minute
to stop and catch my breath! Since coming to Clemson in July, I’ve
pretty much been on the move, sharing my vision for the College
of Engineering and Science, and enlisting team members to help make
that vision a reality.
As you
read through this issue, you’ll notice that there are some
important developments taking place in the college. I am particularly
excited about our new department of engineering and science education,
AND the recently-formed School of Computing. Both of these academic
units will allow us to expand our educational programs and research.
As we begin the faculty searches for these new units, we are seeking
the very best, for our current personnel have set the bar very high.
For example, in the “Faculty News and Notes” section,
you’ll see that our dynamic, engaged colleagues, like Karen
Burg and Darryl D. DesMarteau, are making their mark on the international
stage. This kind of recognition is not only vital for moving us
toward the Top 20, but it also serves as a shining example for our
students, who also continue to make their presence felt nationally.
You will also see that our alumni are continuing to make a difference
all over the world. Clemson University civil engineering alumnus
Ed Sutt (M.S. CE ’96 Ph.D. CE ’00), has come up with
an innovation that could literally save thousands of lives.
The articles you see in these pages provide a brief glimpse into
why our university is so very special. I’ve only been here
five months, but it is clear to me now why Clemson was named the
number one institution in The Scientist magazine’s 2005 “Best
Places to Work in Academia” survey. You hear a lot about the
“Clemson family,” and as one of its newest members,
I can’t begin to express how welcoming everyone here has been.
From sharing their best ideas to assisting me with logistics, the
faculty and staff in the College of Engineering and Science have
really made this whole experience feel more like a homecoming than
a relocation.
I am very fortunate to be here, and I look forward to meeting you
personally in the coming weeks and months. We have some exciting
days ahead, and I hope you’ll join me on the journey.
