| From
the Dean
As I write this column a search committee is busy recruiting a
new dean to take the helm when I relinquish the post this summer.
As I reflect on my tenure here, I am proud of what the faculty and
staff have been able to accomplish on my watch. Ron Grant, the College
Relations director and editor of Earnest, told me that
he’s putting together a “Dean Keinath retrospective”
that will run in the spring/summer edition of our alumni newsletter.
I jokingly replied that, “I expect you’ll have to run
a double issue.”
We almost needed a double issue for
this edition! A quick glance will tell you that things are very
busy in the College of Engineering and Science. The
Sirrine Foundation gift sets the stage for making Clemson the
preeminent institution in intelligent fiber-based materials.
Clemson is also well on its way to
becoming the preeminent institution for automotive engineering graduate
studies. The new Carroll
A. Campbell Jr. Graduate Engineering Center, which will house
one of the nation’s most innovative graduate programs -- automotive
engineering with an emphasis on systems integration.
Cutting edge facilities are only as
good as the humans populating them, so we’re looking for the
“best and the brightest” to walk the halls of the new
center. Thomas R. Kurfess, Ph.D., is one of those. He is the first
endowed chair for the new graduate program.
Great things are also happening in
Computer Science, and
I like to attribute some of that to the department’s new home
in McAdams Hall. The building was dedicated recently, and it’s
already generating a synergy that’s leading to exciting new
research and recognition for the program.
The spring term looks to be a busy
one, and I’d like to call your attention to the activities
planned for Engineering
and Science week. Our student chapter of Tau Beta Pi is working
hard to make this a memorable observance for the campus and community.
Hope to see you on campus this spring!
