2005 Concrete Canoe Nationals come to Clemson
The University of Wisconsin-Madison took top honors for the third
year in a row in the National Concrete Canoe Competition, held this
year at Clemson University’s “Y” Beach on Lake
Hartwell. Billed as the “America’s Cup for civil engineering,”
students from 21 universities paddled their designs in the 18th
Annual American Society of Civil Engineering National Concrete Canoe
Competition.
The boats resembled slick racing canoes made with extremely lightweight
and super-strong concrete mixes. Students designed, built and raced
their canoes, and made presentations to explain the concepts behind
their canoe’s design and construction.
Whether civil engineering students at Clemson are focusing on fluid
hydraulics or transportation, one thing is for sure: in addition
to a solid academic foundation, they will graduate with hands-on
experience.
“Hands-on projects are important to any engineering education,”
said Nadim Aziz, head of the civil engineering department. “Practical
experiences inside and outside the classroom allow students to translate
theory into practice — and eventually the work skills they
will need to succeed.”
In front of 500 spectators, competition was fierce this year with
everything coming down to precision, strength and design. The top
three teams included the University of Wisconsin-Madison in first
place, Clemson University in second place and Michigan Tech University
taking third.
