Formula SAE hits stretch of bad road

Clemson’s 2005 Formula SAE car competed against 122 cars at the last national competition held in Detroit, Michigan. During the acceleration event, an outsourced rear hub weld broke, leaving the car stranded on the starting line. With only an hour before the acceleration and skidpad events closed, the team could not get the car repaired in time to compete in those events. Despite these setbacks, the team came together to fix the car by the afternoon session and continued Clemson’s tradition of finishing the endurance event. The Tigers were one of only 44 teams who had the staying power to complete the endurance test. Despite missing 2 of the 4 dynamic events and receiving no points for those, Clemson finished 50th overall.

The team is looking forward to taking a new ride to the 2006 Nationals at Ford’s Proving Grounds in Romeo, Michigan.

2005 Formula SAE team members include (from right to left) Zach Scott, Robert Moran, Eric Boettner, Jay Jakupca (seated), Devin Tucker, Patrick Gregory, Andy Miller, Gary Swingle, Ben Montgomery, Vikram Iyengar, David Grainger, Bobby Gunter, Victor Hugo Gallas Cervo.
