Welded connection lowers steel bridge

After beating out Georgia Tech, N.C. State, UNC-Charlotte, and the Citadel at the regional level, Clemson’s steel bridge team had high expectations going into the Nationals. Knowing they’d have to push the limits to be successful on the national level, the team put their bridge through heavy design and structural modifications.

Overall scores are based on the speed of construction, and how the bridge responds to a 2500 lb. load. At the national competition, a welded connection failed at 2425 pounds – 75 lbs. away from the 2500 lb. requirement. The team is taking the lessons learned from last year, and are making plans to have a strong showing at the regional and national competitions in 2006.

The 2005 Steel Bridge team members are: (standing, from left to right) Bill Beach, Mike Dukes, Andrew Ruffin, Warren Rohloff, Dr. Scott Schiff, Joey Rhoades, Matt Bowers, Adam D'Alessandro, Max Wright, Patrick Swindler, Ben Linyard; (kneeling, from left to right) Tim Strickland, John Atkins, Viet Huynh, Duncan Bryant (captain), Zach Dukes, Clint Riley.
