College of Engineering and Science

From the Dean

Greetings, alumni and friends of the College of Engineering and Science!  I am particularly proud to be writing the Dean’s column for this edition of Earnest.  As you read on page 1, Clemson recently celebrated a record year in sponsored research - $141.4M.  I take great pride in noting that the College of Engineering and Science contributed 53% of that total.

As discussed in the funding piece, most of our sponsored research comes from five emphasis areas associated with the College of Engineering and Science. In this edition of Earnest, you’ll see a number of stories that point out the important work we are doing in several of these areas – particularly Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences, and Information and Communication Technology.

Fluor Corporation has made a sizeable investment in our industrial engineering department.  Their $2 million matching commitment, combined with $2 million from the South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence program, will allow us to establish the Fluor Endowed Chair of Supply Chain and Logistics.

Our dear friends, Milt and Betty Holcombe have provided a gift that establishes the Milton W. and Betty M. Holcombe Fund for Excellence. This grant will provide for programs such as undergraduate research for seniors and improved graduate education, visiting lecturers and faculty and student enrichment.  Their continuing support has meant so much to the college, and we are very grateful for their generosity.

You’ll note a story about PEER (Programs for Educational Enrichment and Retention) celebrating its 20th anniversary! Through the efforts of Sue Lasser and her team of professional staff and student mentors, Clemson is consistently in the top 10 in the nation among predominantly white schools, for numbers of African-American students graduating in technical fields. Black Clemson students graduate in these fields at an approximate rate of 38  percent of each entering class. The national average graduation rate for black engineering students is 21 percent.  For two decades PEER has been providing opportunities for success to our minority students.

Remember that we always enjoy hearing from CoES alums, so we ask that you keep in touch.  By the way, if you’re going to be on campus over the next few months, Riggs Hall will look a little strange at first glance. Many windows are covered with particle board because we’re involved in a restoration project that will run into early spring.  Inside Riggs, though, you’ll find that same good old-fashioned Clemson hospitality that you’re used to.
