Wise Gift will Have a Lasting Impact

Clemson’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program recently received a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Douglas V. Smith (BS ME ’64) of Houston, Texas.  The Smith contribution will be used to continue and expand the WISE Choice outreach effort.  WISE Choice brings females from all across South Carolina to Clemson for a weekend of career exploration in engineering and science.

Douglas Smith is Chairman and CEO of Lufkin Industries, Inc., which sells and services oil field pumping units, foundry castings, power transmission products and highway trailers throughout the world.

As an undergraduate, Mrs. Smith was President of the Women’s Student Association at Clemson in 1963.

“We are very grateful for the Smith’s interest and support, said Serita Acker, Director of Clemson’s WISE program.  “Their gift will help scores of young South Carolina women explore, evaluate, and hopefully choose to pursue an academic career in one of the technical disciplines here at Clemson.
