Faculty News and Notes
Rajendra
Singh, professor in the Holcombe department of electrical
and computer engineering, will be recognized with the Prof.
J. F. Gibbons Award at the 11th IEEE International Conference
on Advanced Thermal Processing of Semiconductors. The Gibbons
award acknowledges those who have made significant contributions
to the field of advanced thermal processing of semiconductor
materials.
Chalmers
Butler, Alumni Distinguished Professor in the Holcombe
department of electrical and computer engineering, was
recognized with the 2003 Chen- To Tai Distinguished Educator
Award by IEEE’s Antennas and Propagation Society.
The award recognizes outstanding service to education in
the field of antennas and propagation. Honorees are chosen
for: excellence in teaching; preparing students for effective
careers in electromagnetics; curriculum development that
reflects the state of the art; and authorship of research
and course material.
John
Wagner, assistant professor in mechanical engineering,
was one of nine outstanding engineering educators selected
for the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) 2003
Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award Program. This program
recognizes outstanding educators, and gives them the opportunity
to complement their students’ classroom and laboratory
training with the perspective of current industry philosophy
and trends.
Wagner’s
research interests include nonlinear/intelligent control
theory, design and analysis of electro-mechanical systems,
and diagnostic/ prognostic strategies for system health monitoring.
Most recently he’s developed the Rockwell Automation
Mechatronics Educational Laboratory, which allows students
to explore a variety of industrial sensors, hydraulic and
pneumatic actuators, conveyor systems, and programmable logic
controllers common to manufacturing processes.
College Faculty Awards
Each
spring, the College of Engineering and Science honors outstanding
faculty with several awards that recognize teaching excellence.
The
Murray Stokely Award is given to a faculty member in engineering
for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate
level with emphasis on the most recent three years. This
year’s award was presented to Darren
Dawson, McQueen Quattlebaum Professor of Electrical
and Computer Engineering.
Bill
Hare, professor of mathematical sciences, was honored
with the Award of Excellence for Teaching in the Sciences.
The award is given to a faculty member in sciences to recognize
excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate
level with emphasis on the most recent three years.
This
year, the Byar’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching went
to Scott Husson, assistant professor
of chemical engineering. This award recognizes outstanding
instruction in engineering fundamentals.
