SIAM-SEAS Math Jeopardy
competition were from South
Carolina. |

This
spring, the department of mathematical sciences hosted a
joint regional meeting of the Southeastern Section of the
Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Southeast-Atlantic
Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
(SIAM). Some four hundred students and faculty members from
over fifty southeastern colleges and universities attended
this firstever combined meeting of these organizations.
Because
the MAA focuses primarily on undergraduate education, and
SIAM’s main objective is to promote applied research,
the conference featured events for undergraduate and graduate
students that appealed to teaching as well as research. Speakers
came from both the national and regional levels. Ron Graham,
President of the Mathematical Association of America, and
Margaret Wright of the Courant Institute of Mathematical
Sciences headlined the program.
Twelve
undergraduate teams participated in the Second SIAMSEAS Math
Jeopardy competition (see photo, above), hosted by Mike Berry
of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and won by the
team from the College of Charleston. More details about the
meeting are available at www.ces.clemson.edu/~clcox/
MAA-SIAM/.
