Hands-on engineering and science

Flights of fancy

Elementary students practice their aeronautical expertise in the Fluor Daniel atrium.

Second graders from Liberty Elementary, in Liberty, SC visited the campus this spring and experienced the concrete canoe, steel bridge and mini-baja car — up close and personal. Engineering undergrads introduced the elementary visitors to concrete that floats, and gave them an idea what it feels like to sit behind the wheel of an offthe- road baja bandit.

Mechanical engineering graduate students then helped the secondgraders construct paper airplanes to see who could fly higher and farther. Flight tests were launched from the second floor of the Fluor Daniel Building. Winners received a certificate and a foam airplane.

“This is the coolest field trip we have ever been on,” said Andy Ruiz, one of the paper plane champions. “The airplane contest was my favorite part!”

CoES students who made the day special included:

Concrete Canoe: Kyle Farley, Matt Goodner, Chrissy Sloyer, and October McConnell

Steel Bridge: Gene Rogers, Warren Rohloff, and Josh Stamm

Mechanical engineering: Jamie Morales, Chris Osborn, Chris Trangsrud, Will York, Mary Holloway, Scott Holloway, Todd Schweisinger, Seth Barbour, Andy Miller, James Gibert, Brian Slusser, Stephanie Hughes, and Denay Ritchie.
