For
the past two years, the College of Engineering and Science
has undertaken a number of major renovation projects in Holtzendorff
Hall to help freshmen engineering students make the most
of their first year at Clemson. The old YMCA building now
houses a project design laboratory, computer classrooms,
faculty offices, and most recently, General Engineering administrative
staff have taken up residence in this historic location.
“General
engineering now has a home of its own,” observed Ben
Sill, director of general engineering. “All of our
classes are here, our labs, and now our administrative staff
and academic counselors. Having everything together, under
one roof, is a big plus for our freshman engineering students.”
One
of the most innovative uses of the available Holtzendorff
space involves the renovation of the old “Y Theater,” where
for years, students went to enjoy popcorn and a movie. The
old wall drapes that made the room dark for movie projectors,
have been removed to reveal beautiful stained-glass windows.
Modern desks, new carpet, and a little paint, have made the
old theatre an attractive lecture hall.
“We
want to extend a special invitation to the friends and alumni
of the college, to come by and pay us a visit when they’re
on campus,” says Sill. “We’ve tried to
protect the past by renovating in the present and planning
for the future. Some feedback on how we’ve done would
be most welcome.”
