Today's Outstanding Young Researchers
Tomorrow's Academic Leaders
In November 2002, Clemson University celebrated
breaking the $100 million research mark — seven years ahead
of schedule. In 1999, Clemson research contracts stood at
$55 million. At that point, faculty and staff were challenged
to reach the $100 million goal by 2009. Achieving that in
just three short years shows the extraordinary talent and
heart of our faculty, staff and students.
The College of
Engineering and Science (CoES) is particularly proud of its
contribution to the university total - $53 million dollars
in funded research. This accomplishment shows that the CoES
has been very fortunate to attract exceptional young, motivated
faculty to our campus. Today, Clemson has 16 faculty members
with current CAREER Awards from the National Science Foundation
(NSF). The CAREER Award is one of the most prestigious given
by the NSF. It is granted to promising young researchers
in science and engineering who have translated their work
into significant educational activities and “who are most
likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century.”
Two
of those CAREER Award winners have also received a Presidential
Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE),
the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists
and engineers who are in the early stages of their careers.
Only 60 of these awards are granted each year to junior
faculty from universities and agencies around the country.
We
celebrate the excitement that these outstanding young faculty
members
have brought to Clemson and what their work will mean
to our changing world. [MORE]
