Robotics team goes national

Clemson University students took on the University of Utah in the new television series Robot Rivals! The Clemson episode aired in May, on the Do It Yourself Network.

This series takes bright students from rival colleges, puts them in a gigantic warehouse stocked full of parts and gadgets and challenges them to build robots that can perform specific tasks. The winning team then goes on to next-round competition. The Clemson and Utah students had to build “Bomb Retrieval” robots that could penetrate a sheetrock wall, retrieve an egg (which represented the bomb), then take it to a safe place (basket). Unfortunately, in this case, it will be Utah who will advance.

Other engineering teams picked for the first season include Harvard, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Berkeley, MIT, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Winners will compete in a tournament later in the year.

The Clemson team included captain Charly Hermanson, from Bangkok, Thailand, a senior in electrical engineering; James Holcombe, an Anderson native and senior in computer engineering; Iris Johnson, a senior in electrical engineering from Mullins, SC.; and Will McMahan, a senior in electrical engineering from Springfield, VA.
