professor in general
engineering, issued “The Fuji
Challenge” to 715 freshman
engineering students. |

If a picture’s worth a thousand
words, then taking a picture
ought to be worth at least a
couple hundred, right? Well,
there were at least that many
thrown around (some in frustration)
as students struggled to
meet the design challenge
offered by their instructor, Matt
Ohland. Ohland threw down the
gauntlet to all 715 engineering
freshmen who were in CES 101,
Introduction to Engineering and
Science.
The assignment required
students to create a device that
would activate the shutter of a
Fuji disposable camera 20
seconds after testing began. The
device could not have any
dimension that exceeded 24
inches in any direction, including
diagonals. In addition to activating
the camera within the specified
time frame, projects were
also judged on design simplicity,
maintainability, originality,
craftsmanship, safety/ergonomics,
and aesthetics.
Disposable cameras and prizes
were provided by Fuji Photo Film
in Greenwood, SC.
