Honors and Awards
Ballato receives dual recognition
John
Ballato, director of the Center for Optical Materials Science and
Engineering Technologies (COMSET), and an associate professor in
Clemson’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, was
simultaneously honored as both the nation’s outstanding young
Ceramic Scientist and young Ceramic Engineer by the American Ceramic
Society and the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers. He received
the Karl Schwartzwalder-Professional Achievement in Ceramic Engineering
Award and the Coble Award in April, at the Annual Banquet of the
American Ceramic Society in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The
Karl Schwartzwalder-Professional Achievement in Ceramic Engineering
(PACE) Award is presented jointly by the National Institute of Ceramic
Engineers (NICE) and The American Ceramic Society (ACerS). It recognizes
the nation’s outstanding young ceramic engineer whose achievements
have been significant to the profession and the general welfare
of the American people.
The
Robert L. Coble Young Scholars Award recognizes an outstanding scientist
who is conducting research in academia, industry or a government-funded
laboratory.

M. Austin, assistant professor of mechanical engineering,
received the National Textile Center’s Scientific Excellence
Award. |

A. Bateman, assistant professor of bioengineering, received
the Young Investigator Award from the International Bone and
Mineral Society. |

 Joel
V. Brawley, alumni distinguished professor of mathematical
science, received the Baylor University Robert Foster Cherry
Award for Great Teaching. This award honors outstanding professors
in the English-speaking world who are distinguished for their
ability to communicate as classroom teachers. Awardees have
proven track records as extraordinary teachers, with a record
of distinguished scholarship. |

 Russell
H. Brown, professor of civil engineering, received the President’s
Award for his exceptional service and contributions to the
Masonry Society. |

 William
G. Ferrell, Jr., associate professor of industrial engineering
and director of the Supply Chain Engineering and Optimization
Laboratory, received the Institute of Industrial Engineers
Medallion Award. This national award “recognizes individuals
who have made a notable impact on the industrial engineering
profession.” |

 Scott
Husson, assistant professor in chemical engineering was honored
by the Southeast Section of the American Society for Engineering
Education. Husson received the 2003 New Faculty Research Award,
which recognizes a faculty member who has less than six years
of teaching/research experience and who has demonstrated excellence
in both teaching and research. |

 The
Carolina Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society
presented its Charles H. Stone Award to Shiou-Jyh Hwu. Hwu
is a professor of chemistry. |

 Robert
F. Nowack, alumni professor of civil engineering and engineering
mechanics, was honored with the distinguished Service to People
Award, which was presented by the S.C. Section of the American
Society of Civil Engineers. |

 Matthew
Ohland (above/below left), assistant professor in general
engineering, received a Best Paper Award from the Americn
Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He was also runner-up
for ASEE’s 2004 New Faculty Research Award. |

 Roy
P. Pargas, associate professor of computer science, was recognized
for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology, by the
Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. |
