Clemson takes ASCE regional

Clemson made the most of its home field advantage as the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) student chapter took top honors at the 2004 Carolinas’ Conference this spring. The theme for the 2004 conference was “Outside the Box.” Of major interest were the steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions which serve as qualifiers for national events held this summer.

During the conference competition, Clemson’s steel bridge team was disqualified, along with 3 others, because of a rule interpretation. Upon appeal, the conference reversed the disqualification, sending Clemson’s team to the nationals.

While Clemson won the overall conference, the steel bridge team was disqualified, along with 3 others, because of a rule interpretation. Upon appeal, the conference reversed the disqualification, allowing Clemson’s steel bridge team to compete at the nationals. With their win at Carolinas Conference (the 12th in a row), the concrete canoe team has qualified to compete at the National Concrete Canoe Competition to be held in Washington D.C.

The ASCE Carolinas’ Conference brings together 10 schools from Georgia and North and South Carolina: North Carolina State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina A&T State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, The Citadel, Duke University, Trident Technical College, University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, and Clemson.
