University police officer Sgt. Rick Clark, right, pretends

Barker drove one of the school’s Formula SAE cars during
an open house this spring. |
As
Clemson’s Formula SAE team prepared to compete in this year’s
nationals, they sponsored an open house to introduce the campus
and community to SAE competition. Two cars — the 2001 and
’03 — were on hand to give spectators a taste of what
the program was all about. The first to take a test drive was Clemson
President Jim Barker.
“I
could have done 100 more laps,” he exclaimed. “I’m
very impressed, very proud.”
Formula
SAE is a purely collegiate competition where automotive engineering
students design and build their own cars, and eventually drive them
in competition. As Earnest went to press, the team was preparing
for final assembly and testing for the national competition, which
will be held in Pontiac, Michigan. Nearly 140 schools from around
the globe send their brightest engineering students to compete.
Over the last four years, Clemson has placed in the top ten three
times.
