College Faculty Awards
Each
spring, the College of Engineering and Science honors outstanding
faculty with several awards that recognize excellence in teaching
and research.
The
Murray Stokely Award is given to a faculty member in engineering
for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate
level with emphasis on the most recent three years. This year’s
award was presented to Richard Figliola, professor
of mechanical engineering.
Karen
Creager, a lecturer in chemistry, was honored with the
Award of Excellence for Teaching in the Sciences. The award is given
to a faculty member in sciences or textiles to recognize excellence
in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level with emphasis
on the most recent three years.
Tanju
Karanfil, professor of electrical and computer engineering
was awarded the McQueen Quattlebaum Faculty Achievement Award. It
recognizes faculty accomplishments in the preceding year and distinctions
and awards in the past three years.
Karl
Dieter, professor of organic chemistry, received this year’s
Award for Faculty Achievement in the Sciences. This award recognizes
the science faculty member who demonstrated the highest level of
research achievement during 2003.
Mary
Beth Kurz, assistant professor in industrial engineering
received dual honors recently for teaching effectiveness. The CoES
named her the recipient of this year’s Byar’s Prize
for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes outstanding instruction
in engineering fundamentals.
The Operations Research Networking Community of
the Institute of Industrial Engineers has honored her for excellence
in teaching Operations Research. In offering his congratulations,
IE Department Chair, Anand K. Gramopadhye, observed, “This
recognition at both the collegiate and national levels is a true
testament of Dr. Kurz’s hard work in the classroom in improving
the student learning experience.”
