Marathon Men

Steve Melsheimer (left), CoES associate dean for undergraduate studies, and Bob Fjeld, Dempsey Professor of Waste Management in the School of the Environment, competed in, and completed the 2005 Boston Marathon. This is the second time the two have completed the race – they ran together in 1989.

“The field was considerably smaller 16 years ago,” observed Melsheimer. “As I recall there were some 6,000 runners then, compared to 20,000 this year.

“This is always an incredible experience,” offered Fjeld. “People line the entire course, cheering and encouraging you the whole way.” The race is run on Patriot’s Day, which commemorates Paul Revere’s ride, and is a state holiday in Massachusetts.
