Program recognized for being “WISE”
Forty-five
percent of Clemson University students are women, but some still
feel alone. Imagine being the only girl in your classes: You may
wonder if there was anyone on campus you could relate to, and you
may want to change your major from engineering to — anything.
Retention of women engineering majors is a national issue. One Clemson
program, however, is receiving recognition for its success in attracting
and retaining women in science-based majors.
The
Women in Engineering Programs and Advocates Network has presented
Clemson’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program
with the 2005 Women in Engineering Initiative Award.
“Since
1995, WISE has reached out to girls in area schools while lending
a helping hand to women on campus,” observes WISE director,
Serita Acker. “We want young girls to become aware of engineering
and realize that women should have a leading role in discovering
and designing the future.”
WISE director outstanding
The
President’s Commission on the Status of Women at Clemson University
has named WISE director Serita Acker, the 2005 Outstanding Woman
in the Classified Staff category. This award recognizes those who
best exemplify the contribution made by women on campus, as well
as the excellence that women bring to their jobs, their professions
and their communities.
