University Research, Innovation, and National Security: A Balancing Act

Research activities often span collegiate, institutional and territorial boundaries. Early this year, the College of Engineering and Science sponsored a one day seminar that focused on academic research and national security issues. This workshop explored how government partners and university researchers can work together to preserve both academic freedom and the security of the United States.

A recent workshop held at Clemson explored the dilemma researchers sometimes face as they balance academic freedom with national security concerns.

This conference was sponsored by Clemson University and the South Carolina Research Authority, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Presenters included:

Dr. Christain E. G. Przirembel,Vice President of Research and Economic Development
Clemson University

Special Agent Tom Mahlik, NCIS Headquarters Research Technology Protection Program Manager

Special Agent David Szady, Assistant Director for Counterintelligence, FBI Headquarters

CDR John Amy, USN (Ret), PhD, P.E. Director, Power Systems, Syntek Technologies Inc.

Capt. John Kamp, Assistant Chief of Naval Research
