COMSET turns 5!
The
Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies
(COMSET) celebrated its 5th anniversary this spring. COMSET is an
internationally recognized centerpiece program at Clemson focused
on cutting edge research, education, and technology transfer of
materials for optical fiber and related photonic technologies.
COMSET
is actively pursuing its vision to be the pre-eminent focal point
for knowledge creation of high, value-added photonic material technologies,
and as it celebrates this important anniversary, notes a number
of remarkable accomplishments:
Research productivity and scholarship:
$17,500,000 in research funding
160 publications
300 presentations at national/international meetings
25 patents applied for
5 patents issued since founding (all commercially licensed!!)
3 NSF CAREER awards to junior faculty
Approved for $10M funding for an Endowed Chair in Optical Materials,
marking COMSET as a South Carolina Research Center of Economic Excellence
Economic development:
2 spin off companies spun out (all located in South Carolina, all
employing Clemson graduates who previously would probably not have
found opportunities within the state)
1 research alliance with University of North Carolina - Charlotte
and Western Carolina University forming the Carolinas Micro-Optics
Triangle
1 educational alliance with TriCounty, Greenville, and Spartanburg
Technical Colleges, implementing 2 year curricula in optical technologies
COMSET
is housed in Clemson’s new Advanced Materials Laboratory,
a $21 million complex that is home to one of the finest electron
microscopy research laboratories in the United States.
