Goldwater Scholars

Two CoES students have been named Goldwater Scholars for 2005. Katie Abole, a junior chemistry/biochemistry major from Irmo, S.C. and Caroline Yount, a junior physics major from Conover, N.C.

Goldwater Scholarships are awarded for one or two years of undergraduate study to students committed to the pursuit of careers in science, mathematics or engineering. The scholarship covers expenses for tuition, fees, books and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.

In 2002, Clemson was awarded its first two Goldwater Scholars. A year later, Clemson was recognized with 3 recipients; in 2004, the College of Engineering and Science had an unprecedented 4 scholars. Since 2002, only one school – Penn State has had more Goldwater Scholars than Clemson.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.
