“MATHLETES” compete at Clemson
More than 100 sixth, seventh and eighth-grade “mathletes”
competed in the 23rd annual MATHCOUNTS competition at Clemson University’s
Madren Conference Center recently. MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching
and competition program that promotes math achievement through grass-roots
involvement.
The winners advanced to a state competition in Columbia and a national
competition in Washington, D.C.
“The College of Engineering and Science is extremely happy to
partner with MATHCOUNTS,” said Chris Porter, director of undergraduate
recruitment for Clemson’s College of Engineering and Science.
“We are very pleased we can provide a forum for area students
to compete against their peers who have similar abilities and attitudes
toward the world of math.”

Students from 23 schools in Pickens, Greenville, Anderson, Oconee,
Laurens, Abbeville and Greenwood counties participated in the 23
annual MATHCOUNTS Competition.
MATHCOUNTS is organized by the Piedmont Chapter of the South Carolina
Society of Professional Engineers. The event is hosted by the Clemson
University College of Engineering and Science, and locally sponsored
by Metromont Prestress.
